With Those We Love Alive is a twine game by Porpentine, who can be found on their website aliendovecote. WTWLA is easily the best twine game I played during 2013, and ignited the most intense emotional response a text-based game has ever made me feel.
The game is accompanied by music that guides the scenes, and even though the game tells you playing with headphones and sound is just "Recommended", it's more like "Necessary". The music in this game is powerful enough to make clicking on text exciting, and the experience just isn't complete without it.
Throughout the game, you are told to write various symbols on your body as a reminder of your choices and experience within the game. By the end of the game, these symbols are incredibly meaningful, and with each playthrough and the different (Or same!) decisions you make, the symbols can be radically different.
I can't stress enough how fascinating this games setting is. I would spend days at a time looking down from a balcony or through my spyglass at the strange, horrifying, disgusting, beautiful world around me.
It's definitely one of the most fascinating uses of the twine engine I've ever seen, and Porpentine clearly knows what she's doing more than most twine authors.
If you enjoy games that cover serious topics, and like to explore non-traditional fantasy worlds, check out With Those We Love Alive RIGHT NOW. It's free on aliendovecote.
